The different types of career paths for Accountants.
By Ron Goldson on 10th October 2019
A career in accounting is considered one of the more stable career choices in our ever-changing economy.
This career path starts with a post-secondary education in Business, Accounting or Finance. In Canada, the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation is the preeminent accounting and business credential and is often a requirement for many of our clients. Students of the CPA designation are required to complete educational courses, gain relevant experience and complete the Common Financial Examination.
Since the CPA designation requires relevant work experience, most people work as they pursue their designation. Entry level opportunities within the accounting field include: Accounts Payable/ Receivable, Bookkeeping, Accountant or Accounting Assistant.
These positions require little to no experience and introduce foundational accounting knowledge such as debits/ credits, general ledger, balance sheet, income statement, and cash flow statements.
Once an accountant becomes designated and has approximately three or more years of work experience they can move into the following roles: Senior Accountant, Tax Accountant, Senior Financial Analyst, Treasurer, and Manager of Accounting / Finance positions.
These roles continue to build on technical accounting knowledge, develop leadership skills and grow analytical capabilities. You could get involved with auditing, financial reporting, planning, and forecasting for the business.
Strategic leadership opportunities include: Controller, Director/VP Finance, Partner and CFO positions.
Accounting and finance executives have oversight of the financial health of the organization. They also influence the strategic direction of the organization through potential investments and mergers and acquisitions.
A career in accounting is extremely rewarding and is one of the top paying jobs in Toronto. There are numerous opportunities to grow and develop from start-ups to established businesses.
